Pros and Cons of Buying Used Pike Fishing Gear

There are many different types of fishing equipment that are popular with anglers, and anyone who has really gotten into the hobby of chasing trophy fish. This can be really expensive as brand new fishing rods can be $30-50 or even more for specialty pieces, and then there’s fishing line for each, reels for each, a good fishing net, and many good pike fishing lures can go for $10-15 each for brand new ones. If you’re looking for 100 new lures along with all the other equipment, that can add up to a huge amount. This is when looking at buying used pike fishing gear can definitely appear like an appealing option.

There are pros and cons to looking at used gear. One of the major pros is that used pike gear is much less expensive than the brand new stuff. In fact, it’s not uncommon to find some deals on batches of barely used pike lures for wholesale prices, instead of paying the retail price of every individual lure. Another pro is that sometimes older equipment is made better or at a higher quality than some new equipment, as sometimes new designs turn out to be flawed or inferior to the old.

Some cons of used pike fishing gear include the simple fact that used lures might be beat up. This could be from one or two treble hooks that are missing part of the hook, which isn’t a big deal on a lure like a rapala, to the overall lure just being beat up from being used. This isn’t always a big deal, but other times it can be.

Another possible disadvantage is a lack of a possible warranty. Not all new pike fishing gear is going to have a warranty, but used gear isn’t going to have any type of a protection with it the way some near gear might. That does increase the inherent risk factor of grabbing used gear.
